Makakatana

Makakatana is a family-run safari lodge inside iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. Our suites are raised among the trees of the coastal forest and joined by boardwalks, with Lake St Lucia just beyond.

Your stay is fully inclusive and unhurried: days on the water and in the wild with our own guides, evenings by the fire, and a welcome that feels like coming home. Small by design, and personal in every detail.

Stretching along the north-east coast of KwaZulu-Natal, iSimangaliso became South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999. Here coral reefs, forested dunes, wetland and savannah meet around Lake St Lucia, Africa’s largest estuarine system: whales pass offshore, while hippo, rhino and elephant share the shores. Few places on earth hold so much life so close together.

Our days are designed around it. Drift through the Narrows among hippo and crocodile, cross the lake to an empty Indian Ocean beach, glide the bay in near silence at first light, and follow the wetland’s wildlife by day and after dark. Each one, led by our own guides, brings you a little closer to the wonder in its name.

The Morrison family has welcomed guests here since 1999, but the warmth people remember belongs to everyone who works here. Many of our team have been with us for well over a decade, and they know this place by heart: the lake’s moods, the birds by their calls, how you take your coffee.

Our family has lived beside this lake for more than a century, and looking after it is simply part of daily life. Since 2023 the lodge has run on a hybrid solar system, and our two eco-boats cross the bay on solar-charged motors, so quietly that the hippo and birds carry on undisturbed.

Herbs come from our garden, eggs from our chickens and honey from the hives Andrew Morrison has kept since childhood. Water is filtered rather than bottled, food waste is composted, and our neighbours collect plastic, tins and glass for recycling.

Every stay also carries our own conservation levy, shared between wildlife vets, anti-poaching teams, the Ezemvelo Honorary Rangers and small projects led by our own staff.
