Makakatana

Getting here

Closer than a safari has any right to be

The lodge is inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the western shore of Lake St Lucia — about 2.5 hours north of Durban’s international airport by tar road, or a short Airlink hop to Richards Bay and a 1.5-hour transfer. No bush airstrips, no 4×4, no charter budget required.

Via Durban — King Shaka International

≈ 2.5 hours by road

Fly into King Shaka International (DUR), then drive the N2 north for roughly 245 km. It’s an easy, scenic run up the Zululand coast; precise turn-by-turn directions come with your booking confirmation. Private road transfers can be arranged for the full leg.

Via Richards Bay — the fly-in shortcut

≈ 1 h 10 m flight + 1.5 hours by road

Airlink flies Johannesburg (JNB) to Richards Bay (RCB) in about an hour and ten minutes. From there the lodge is about 1.5 hours by road transfer, arranged ahead so someone is waiting when you land.

Self-driving a KZN circuit

No 4×4 required

Access is by ordinary tar road off the N2 — any rental car manages it comfortably. Makakatana fits naturally as the 2–3 night lake-and-coast chapter of a KwaZulu-Natal loop with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (an hour away) and the Drakensberg or Durban beyond.
